Even though it is filmed in a format similar to District 9, it just doesn’t make sense as to why there would be music. Now while I know this is filmed in a documentary style, I felt like the music and soundtrack really took me out of it. (Which doesn’t make sense since in Night of the Living Dead, the outbreak clearly takes place in the early 70s where in Diary of the Dead, the outbreak takes place in the early 2000s.) However, this movie still has quite a few problems. It is filmed in a style of a documentary within the Romeroverse, right at the start of the outbreak. This movie has a rather decent style in terms of being a found footage film though. Only thing is that it’s a shaky camera and sometimes you never even see what’s terrorizing these people. The whole situation gets worse and finally, at the climax, everybody dies. One of the members in the crew want to leave but the “leader” or the father refuses, causing the group/family to be trapped with whatever is haunting them. Most other found footage films I’ve seen are either the exact same plot – Guy moves in/investigates area/films a documentary in a supposedly haunted area/house. Others that are pretty good, though not great in my opinion, was The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity. That movie was just brilliant and it made sense to film it in found footage format, as it was an alien invasion story told from the perspective of a civilian. With one of them being one of my favourite sci-fi movies of all time – Cloverfield. ![]() ![]() However, I won’t deny that there are very few found footage films that I found to be pretty good. With good cinematography and a good score to really feel invested. One of my biggest issues with them is that when I watch a movie, I watch it for a visual story. But it really could’ve been SO MUCH better. I really wanted to like this movie but at the end of the day, it was just not that great. Romero for the very first time and I have to say… this is definitely the beginning of the end for Romero’s zombie charm in his movies. I just saw the movie Diary of the Dead (2007) by George A. r/TheWalkingDead - Episode posts go here!
